Ebonix is a band in India that plays live gigs across the capital. We got talking to them. Read on..
What genre do you guys play?
Dhruv: Progressive rock.
How did it all start?
Dhruv: We started off as a school band (we didn’t have a keyboard player back then). We used to cover bands initially. It was in college that it struck to us that okay, we gotta do this shit (laughs).
What was the first song Ebonix ever wrote?
Dhruv: Killer on the loose.
Who/What influences your music?
Dhruv: We all have diverse influences of music, so, it’s actually pretty hard for us to digest that.(laughs) But I think Karnivool has a major influence on the band’s music.
How did you come up with the band name?
Dhruv: It started off with how it starts off with every band, but nobody would really confess it. We opened the dictionary and we started looking for cool words(laughs). So, we stumbled upon this word ‘Ebonics’ which is an African- American language which was constructed to give people a common tongue to express their thoughts. We found significance in the fact that we put out what we like putting out, we voice our opinions. So, yeah.
Favourite song by Ebonix?
What are you guys working on currently?
Dhruv: We’re working on a concept album. We’re planning to take the entire playlist, everything we’ve done and connecting it to portray a story. The whole playlist flows smoothly, you wouldn’t be able to make out when there’s a pause between two songs. So, we’re basically trying to stitch the whole album into something that comes out as an experience.
What do you think makes Ebonix stand out?
Dhruv: It’s not about sounding different or standing out for that matter! All that actually matters to us is the way people react to our music. We’re putting a lot of thought and effort into all that we construct and getting a reaction out of people (and a reaction that gives you unparalleled satisfaction at that) and that’s all that matters.
What does music mean to you?
Dhruv: It’s a dive into another world, it’s satisfaction and everything on the book that it is to every music lover out there but for us, music is the satisfaction that we get after someone from the audience comes up to us and tells us that we were good. It makes us feel like we did good to someone. We were playing at the Hard Rock Cafe and there was this guy who sang every lyric along with us! THAT was amazing feeling!
What’s the best part about being in a band?
Dhruv: We’re all very close friends and not just bandmates. So, there’s a lot of comfort that we guys share. We all know everything about each other. We’re like family.
Anything you’d like to tell us about the upcoming songs?
Dhruv: They sound simple but are very difficult to play. They’re smooth, flowy and well, a treat to the senses. I don’t think I’m old enough to say this, but I think the content is very deepened, very mature. We’ve writing songs about how a guy wakes up from a dream and watches it transcend into reality. So, it’s kind of like the unison of the two dimensions. It is bloody amazing!
If all the band members were superheroes, who all would you guys be? Please justify.:P
Dhruv: I’ll definitely be Batman and the only plausible explanation that I can come up with right now is that I love Christopher Nolan! (laughs). Karan (drummer) would be Robin because we’re like always in it together! Vaibhav Chawla (vocalist) always has an alternative view to everything. So, he’d be Captain America.(after a short pause, still laughing) Nahi yaar, vaise pata nahi kyun bana diya Captain America use! Wait, um, Vaibhav would be Ironman because he’s the man on the front (The Avengers reference). Antariksh (keyboard player) would be The Hulk because when he plays, he doesn’t give a shit to whatever’s happening around him, he just plays. And Vaibhav Sahay(bassist) would be Krrish. (on being asked to elucidate) He plays with a Hindi band alongside na! (laughs).
Any experiences with female fans?
Dhruv: Kuch nahi hota! (laughs) Everybody thinks that band members get a lot of female attention. That certainly isn’t the case. We keep on telling each other “Bhai koi nahi milne wala. Gig ke baad ghar pe jaake so jao!” (laughs).
Live Gigs- An unforgettable experience
Girls- Someday (laughs)
Interviews- Scary (haha!)
