My brother’s friend is getting married the next week and I am yet to prepare my dance number. God, it never gets easier. Watching the actors dance to these numbers looks to be so simple on screen but trust me guys its really is no mean task. I have steps, which require me to move my hands and when I try and do it, I end up moving my belly too (seems like the belly is preparing a dance number of its own). The choreographers make it look so easy. They just create steps out of thin air and glide through performing them seamlessly. These guys are seriously doing a difficult yet an interesting task. The Bollywood industry has some very shining choreographers who are redefining and transforming the Bollywood dance styles. Saroj Khan, Prabhu Deva, Shiamak Davar, Vaibhavi Merchant and Chinni Prakash are a few names, which make the Bollywood dance industry what it is.
Saroj Khan originally named Nirmala Kishanchand Sadhu Singh Nagpal was born on 22nd November 1948 and is one of the best choreographers the Bollywood industry has seen. She is married to Sardar Roshan Khan. She has choreographed over 200 films and has been the recipient of National Film Award for Best Choreography three times. She runs a dance school to called Saroj Khan Dance Academy. She started as a dance teacher when she was just thirteen years old.
Prabhu Deva was born on 3rd April 1973 and was originally named Shankupani Sundaram. He is a two time National Best Choreographer Award and has often been referred to as the Michael Jackson of India. Apart from being a talented choreographer he also happens to be a great actor and a director. He recently played the lead role in ABCD (Any Body Can Dance), which is the first Indian 3D dance film.
Shiamak Davar is a prominent Indian dance choreographer who was born on 19th October 1961. He was the director of choreography for the Commonwealth Games Melbourne and Commonwealth Games Delhi. He has been a recipient of the National Film Award for Best Choreography and also runs a dance school, which was probably the first school in India to introduce Western Dance form and Contemporary Jazz.
Vaibhavi Merchant is a well-known Bollywood choreographer. She bagged the National Film Award for Best Choreography for her work in ‘Dhol Baaje’ in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Although she worked in a Malayalam film she soon returned to choreography. She also choreographed a special song in the movie Bombay Talkies that was released on the celebration of 100 years of the Indian cinema industry.
Chinni Prakash is a popular Indian choreographer who has worked in Kannada, Telugu and Hindi films. Some of his notable works are ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast’ and ‘Shehar Ki Ladki’. His wife, Rekha Chinni Prakash is also a well-known choreographer. He happens to be uncle of Vaibhavi Merchant.
I hope all this talking will give me some inspiration to prepare for my dance number while the choreographers continue to do their good work going. The Bollywood is truly grateful to these choreographers for their contribution to the industry. This is only a list of few but there are other brilliant choreographers out there.
