The Doppler Effect is a band based out of Delhi. We got talking to the Bassist of the band – Akshay Johar. Read on…
How did the band come about?
Akshay: The drummer (Suyash) and I had been jamming for a long time. At that point, I was playing for another band and Suyash was in the first year of college. We were just thinking about starting a new project. He contacted the guitarist and the vocalist and we randomly met up in a jam pad. So, yea, that’s about it!
What genre do you guys play?
Akshay: Progressive funk rock.
How did you come up with the band name?
Akshay: We were supposed to play for BITSMUN(fest at BITS Pilani, Goa) and we hadn’t yet come up with the band name! It was an hour before the deadline that we came up with this name (after about an hour and a half of throwing random names at each other!). And it also makes sense because even when we’re done with the gig, the music stays with the audience.
What was the first song The Doppler Effect ever wrote?
Akshay: It was ‘Believe’ which is actually, also the title track of the EP (Extended Play).
What does the song signify?
Akshay: It embodies how The Doppler Effect is completely in terms of the sound. It has a very rhythm driven music. Ashwin (guitarist) is playing a very ambient sort of music but at the same time, he also embellishes the whole thing in a very ambient tone. Sherry (vocalist) has this soaring chorus. So, yea, even though all of us stand out very differently, we come together at the end of the day to make some good music and we firmly believe in the sort of music that we do make.
What are you currently working on?
Akshay: We are just about done with the recording and the mixing of the EP which is due for a release this October. And a lot of live gigs coming up!
Who/ What influences your music (to some extent, maybe)?
Akshay: Tool, Karnivool – and to a lot of extent at that!
Given a chance, which pop star/band would you like to perform with?
Akshay: Lady Gaga and Maroon5! (laughs!)
Recording or live performance?
Akshay: Live performance, for sure! Nothing beats that!
Tell us about a bizarre experience.
Akshay: We were performing at this place about a year ago. We were the headlining band and some other band was supposed to open for us but somehow the slots got interchanged and we had to open instead. So, there was this gentleman (hella drunk!) who kept on shouting “Get off the stage. You guys suck! I hate you! Get the other band on the stage!”. We chose to ignore but after we finished the first song, it got really out of hand because he started abusing. So, we stopped abruptly and confronted him.
And it turned out that the man was actually the father of the guitarist of the other band! (laughs)
His son came and he tried to calm him down but eventually, the bouncers had to throw him out. (laughs)
We wish The Doppler Effect all the best for their future gigs. Say hi to them on the their facebook page.
